ABOUT ME

My name is Katie Hayes.  I'm a writer, illustrator and embarrassing mom.  One day, I'm sure my kids will groan at the stories and songs I make up for them, but for now, they still think I'm fun.

A little about my background: I grew up in the North Carolina Mountains, where my parents quickly taught me all I need to know about life. My mom introduced me to poets such as Robert Service, Shel Silverstein, and John Prine. My dad taught me how to fish, and play the guitar. My grandmother Shirley taught me how to paint.

After Studying English Literature at UNC Chapel Hill, I worked in higher education for many years before settling down to a career as a creative professional. Today, I live in Hillsborough, NC with my husband, two kids, and our big smelly dog.  In my free time, I love to knit, garden, and of course---write.

A little bit about my writing: I actually love to write across many genres.  In a former life, I often wrote songs for several NC bands, including the rowdy Americana band, The Whiskey Smugglers. I still keep an active humor blog for adults, and many of the initial supporters of this children's book project were readers of that blog. My goal in writing Twisted Tales for Tacky Children was to create a book that parents would enjoy reading to their children.
